The Instructional Designer/Trainer leads and/or supports training considerations (e.g., new member on-boarding, SPP Integrated Marketplace support, mandatory compliance projects, implementation of pending standards, etc.).  With the number of reliability standards and compliance concerns greater than ever before, SPP members increasingly need assistance in multiple areas.  The Instructional Designer/Trainer provides guidance to member companies as they navigate compliance with NERC Standard PER-005-1.


Responsibilities:

Analysis:

  • Conduct thorough analyses with stakeholders prior to the development of learning experiences to ensure that the content is aligned with the need
  • Work with Compliance and other stakeholders to identify training needs necessary to support mandatory, Compliance, and Regulatory projects
  • Assure the maintenance and accuracy of existing training

Consulting/Facilitation/Coordination:

  • Support increased customer training efforts (e.g., net conferences, classroom, drills, Integrated Marketplace)
  • Provide consulting role with members regarding PER-005-1
  • Work with the Market Trainer to provide input into the market training design and development process
  • Work with the Market Trainer, IT, and vendor to provide input into the design and development of the Market Training Environment
  • Assist with new member on-boarding
  • Provide consulting/facilitation for internal initiatives (e.g., customer service, teamwork, leadership, etc.)
  • Work with vendors to facilitate knowledge transfer from consultants to in-house SMEs
  • Work with SPP operations and performance support specialists, SPP customer trainers, communications department, HR department, instructional designer, and internal stakeholders to ensure the timely development of training
  • Coordinate with the SPP training staff in the development of online assessments necessary for gaining NERC continuing education credits
  • Coordinate with training staff on the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of all learning events
  • Coordinate with web-based training specialist on: a) determining the most effective online content and e-learning opportunities, b) script development and c) determining most effective (interactive) presentation of content
  • Support the expanded use of the Dispatcher Training Simulator (scenario-based for regional and Operator Continuing Education training)

Design and Delivery:

  • Work with customer trainers and the Operations Training Working Group in the design of event-specific scenarios for restoration drills, emergency response drills, and operator continuing education training
  • Respond to just-in-time training requests
  • Design and deliver training associated with upcoming standards
  • Design and deliver training associated with Business Continuity
  • Work with stakeholders to identify and design training on tools (e.g., OATI tagging, RSS, e-Terra Vision, etc.)
  • Prepare and train additional staff brought on to assist with design and testing future initiatives including SPP Integrated Marketplace, Consolidated Balancing Authority and other areas of increased responsibilities

Measurement:

  • Measure and monitor success of customer training programs for operations personnel
  • Accurately and thoroughly document training projects, ensuring the documentation meets all regulatory requirements
  • Design and develop authentic assessment tools for each training session that adhere to NERC Continuing Education requirements
  • Utilize assessment software to produce online exams and reports
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date training records for NERC Continuing Education requirements
  • Document training such that all necessary evidence for compliance is recorded and readily available for auditing

Other:

  • Participate in special projects as assigned
  • Provide training assistance in areas of expertise to other employees, as needed
  • Execute administrative tasks (e.g., e-mails, documentation, etc.)


Requirements:

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in an education/training-related field
  • Minimum of five years of curriculum design and development experience 

Required:

  • Deep understanding of the systematic approach to training
  • Oral and written communications, presentation skills, and training development skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, a large volume of work, and stringent deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to facilitate training sessions and work with subject matter experts across the company and with member company employees
  • Adaptability and strong analytical skills
  • Evidence of self-initiative, self-direction, motivation, as well as critical and creative thinking skills.
  • Flexibility and the ability to function with constantly changing and multiple priorities
  • Good organizational skills
  • Understanding of and compliance with SPP Policies and Procedures

Preferred:

  • Experience in the electric utility industry is preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience in market operations will be considered favorably

Travel Requirement:

  • This position requires minimal travel (approximately 5%)
